On July 25, al-Qa’ida in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) leader Abdelmalek Droukdel released an audio recording stating that the militant group had killed 78-year-old French engineer Michel Germaneau who was kidnapped in Niger in April 2010. The execution of Germaneau was likely conducted in retaliation for the joint French, Mauritanian military raid on a suspected AQIM camp in Mali the previous week.

These demonstrations have primarily focused on perceived housing inadequacies, rampant unemployment, and declining real wages among the local population.
